THE PIECE HALL CHRISTMAS MARKET, HALIFAX

The Piece Hall is an 18th-century cloth trading hall built around a vast open Georgian courtyard, and for six weekends every winter that courtyard becomes Halifax’s own market square. Around 50 stalls are set up each weekend, rotating through the run, showcasing independent food and drink producers alongside artisan makers selling homeware, jewellery and gifts. Because the market runs across six separate weekends rather than one continuous stretch, it rewards a planned visit rather than a passing one. YORK CHRISTMAS MARKET

York’s market, also known locally as St Nicholas Fair, fills Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square with alpine chalets. More than 80% of the traders are based in Yorkshire, which makes this less a generic festive market and more a showcase of what the county’s small producers actually make. The weekly Tuesday closure is a genuine change from previous years, introduced as a trial rest day, so do not turn up expecting stalls on a Tuesday: the rest of the city stays open, but the market itself does not. SHEFFIELD CHRISTMAS MARKET

WHITBY CHRISTMAS MARKET & FESTIVAL

Whitby does Christmas with the sea behind it. GRASSINGTON CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Grassington’s market spreads across two separate Saturdays rather than one long run, with the village’s Christmas lights switch-on falling on the Friday in between, 27 November at 4pm. The village’s cobbled streets and stone shopfronts do much of the atmospheric work without any need for embellishment, and stallholders and shopkeepers in period dress are part of the town’s established character each December.
HARROGATE: TWO SEPARATE EVENTS
Harrogate’s usual town-centre Christmas Fayre will not take place in 2026, so anyone expecting that specific event should note that it has been replaced, in effect, by two distinct, separately organised events.
Little Bird Made, Valley Gardens. 5 to 6 December 2026, an outdoor artisan market curated by Little Bird Made, an established North Yorkshire market operator, bringing independent makers, artists and food producers into the Sun Colonnade setting of Valley Gardens.
