St Fagans ghost tours take you into a 16th-century manor house near Cardiff at night, with stories drawn from what museum staff and visitors say they have seen and heard, not from actors.
Most Halloween ghost walks in Britain follow the same script. A guide in a cape, a jump scare round a corner, a story lifted from a book. The tours at St Fagans Castle work the other way round. No actors, no props, and no claim that this is a paranormal investigation.
What you get instead are accounts collected from the people who know the building best: the staff who lock it up at night and the visitors who have walked its rooms. Lights switching on by themselves. Voices heard singing and talking in empty rooms. Children seen at the windows in old-fashioned clothes. Then you walk the grounds where some of it happened, in the dark.

What It Is
St Fagans Castle is not a castle in the storybook sense. The house you walk through was built around 1580 by Dr John Gibbon, a local lawyer, in the E-shaped plan that was the height of fashion under Elizabeth I. It stands inside the curtain wall of a medieval castle, on a site first fortified by the Normans. Museum Wales describes it as the first symmetrical building in South Wales of its time.
In 1946, the Earl of Plymouth gave the castle and eighteen acres to the National Museum of Wales to serve as an open-air museum. St Fagans opened to the public in 1948 and now holds more than 40 historic buildings moved here from across Wales, from ironworkers’ cottages to a medieval church. The ghost tours are run by Dark Wales Tours in partnership with the museum, and they are the only way to get inside the castle after closing time.
What Happens on St Fagans Ghost Tours
You meet at the main museum entrance, 15 minutes before the start. The gates are locked once the tour sets off, so late arrivals cannot join. From there, your guide leads you through the grounds to the castle, where the group gets rare night-time access to the ground floor.
The stories come room by room. According to the museum’s event listing, the accounts on record include lights turning on and off by themselves, voices heard singing and talking, and children spotted at the windows wearing old-fashioned clothes. Outside, people have reported figures in military uniform in the grounds and a solitary man in the gardens.
The tour lasts about two hours, and most of it is spent outdoors. Expect steps, some steep slopes and very little seating. The castle roof is under repair, so scaffolding will remain in place through 2027, though Dark Wales Tours says it does not affect the route.
At 11pm on the last nights of October, the museum is completely silent. Your footsteps on the gravel terraces are the loudest thing for a hundred yards, and every torch beam picks out breath in the cold air.

The Halloween tours run on Thursday 29, Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026, all starting at 11pm, and all three nights had sold out by late September. If you missed them, the same castle tour runs at 8pm on Thursday 19 and Thursday 26 November and Thursday 10 December 2026, with tickets still available at the time of writing.

Getting There
The museum sits about four miles west of Cardiff city centre. Driving is the simplest option at night, and parking is free for ghost tour guests. For the 11pm Halloween tours, you will not finish until around 1am, so if you are not driving, book a taxi back into Cardiff in advance. Worth Knowing
- On 8 May 1648 the village of St Fagans saw the largest battle ever fought in Wales. Historic UK records that Parliamentarian troops under Colonel Thomas Horton routed a far larger Royalist force in around two hours, with about 300 killed and more than 3,000 taken prisoner.
- Bring your own torch. The guides can lend one, but you will want your hands free and your own beam on the steps.
- Between 1885 and 1910, the Windsor family used the castle as a summer house and installed electric lighting powered by water from the village corn mill. Keep that in mind when the guide reaches the stories about lights switching on by themselves.

- Book as early as you can. The Halloween nights sold out weeks in advance, and most autumn dates have done the same.
- Dress for a long evening outside: waterproof layers, a hat and gloves.
- Wear boots or trainers with grip. The route includes outdoor steps and steep slopes.
- Arrive 15 minutes early. The gates lock once the tour starts.
